Winter is passing, and Spring is upon us! Honestly, April (alongside October) is one of our favorite times in Vegas. The weather is perfect (with an average high of 78 F and low of 51 F), pool season is on the cusp of opening again, and outdoor activities – walking along the Strip, golfing, sporty events (of which there are many this month), visiting regional nature preserves and parks – are comfortable and accessible. And Vegas is exempted from the saying “April showers bring May flowers” – this is the desert after all! Average rainfall in April is just 0.21”.
Note: April can bring a lot of Spring Breakers to town, so be prepared for younger crowds getting their party on around hotspots like pools and bars.

Races, Marathons and Sporty Events in April
Throughout April Vegas is hosting a ton of athletic events ranging from fun, novelty runs to serious professional sporting competitions that offer some serious prize money. Not so athletically inclined yourself? Don’t let that put you off: these events typically include activities and entertainment open for spectators as well as participants. The Reebok Spartan Race is particularly fun for spectators, as you can watch the athletes undertake a crazy obstacle course, culminating in an epic Gladiator Pit.
April 6: The Reebok Spartan Race Las Vegas
The Reebok Spartan Race is designed to test your athletic prowess over an 8-mile course. Participants will all receive a finisher’s medal, t-shirt, free beer ticket (if 21 or over), and bragging rights.
Spectators are also welcome: tickets are available for $20 online or $25 onsite and include: $5 in Spartan bucks for merchandise, entry to the rocking festival area, a festival grounds map, access to some of the obstacles as well as access to the epic Gladiator pit and finish line.
If you haven’t registered yet, hurry! Online registration closes April 3.
April 6: Las Vegas Biggest Loser RunWalk Off-Road Challenge
If the Reebok Spartan Race is a bit too intense for you, we have an awesome alternative: The Biggest Loser RunWalk! This is a race series designed to help participants reach their fitness goals in a positive, motivating, and non-intimidating way. This race takes participants off the pavement and along trails around the 320-acre Lake Las Vegas. The family-friendly event is not timed and includes a kids fit obstacle course for kids ages 4–13.
Note: this event will be taking place at the same spot as the Spartan, and participants can pay the same spectator fee to gain access to the festival zone.
April 20: ColorSmacked! 5K Run
This unusual novelty run will turn you in a living rainbow as you run through clouds of non-toxic color each kilometer. The color smackings are safe for all ages, so this is a fun family event that kids will seriously dig. Remember: wear clothes that can be bombarded with color. After the race, celebrate with live music and refreshments.

First Friday Art Celebration (Free)
Friday, April 5, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Downtown Arts District
Vegas celebrates its arts community the first Friday of every month. It’s a fun and family-friendly event that includes artists, vendors and activities. It’s also free, but you may want to bring along some cash if you plan on purchasing any art or taking advantage of the many, many food trucks. The celebration also usually features multiple live bands and live performance “paintings.” It’s one of our favorite events to take the family, get away from the Strip for an evening and discover a cornucopia of artisans specializing in all kinds of media, like painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and more.
